The first official Meeting of the Club was held on 7 January, 1974, with nearly 100 Members in attendance. The original cost of the Club was $49,320, which was made up of $6000 in funds from Members and Sponsors and $43,320 from the Federal Government. The Club was originally built on large concrete skids (still visible today) that would enable the building to be towed away by bulldozers should rising seas threaten!
