Rising Surf Star’s Huge Season... Print E-mail

Nathan Gray - A Rising Surf Star!It has been a busy few months for 18 year old Nathan Gray of Lennox Head Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club. He has recently returned from New Zealand after being selected to represent NSW in the Under 21 Development Squad. Nathan was also a member of the Country NSW team that competed against teams from New Zealand and Hunter Branch at the Central Coast in early January. On top of all this he has been training hard for upcoming competition at the NSW State Championships as well as the Australian Championships to be held in April.

Nathan who has had his most successful season ever was ecstatic at being selected to represent NSW. "It was great competing with Ali Day who has done so well in the Nutri-Grain series, plus I got to make so many new friends. I was also able to compete in a few different events such as paddling outrigger canoes. It was an unbelievable experience."

Nathan's surf coach Lou Wilson was generous in his praise "Nathan is the type of guy who never gives up. He works extremely hard at training and is now getting the results and recognition he deserves. He had some excellent results at the Country Championships in January both in Under 19 and Open events."

Nathan, who is also a member of the Ballina Indoor Swim Team, trains up to 12 sessions a week, either in the pool or at the beach. "It was a bit hectic last year fitting it all in whilst doing my HSC – I'm glad that's all done and I'm looking forward to studying at Southern Cross Uni this year." Nathan has recently commenced a double degree in Sport and Exercise Science combined with Secondary Education.

The quietly spoken 18 year old doesn't like to talk up his achievements, instead he pays tribute to his coaches and team mates. "I'd like to thank my swim coach Peter Charlton from Ballina Indoor as well as my surf coach Lou Wilson for all the support and encouragement they have given me, as well as all my team mates from Lennox Head Surf Club and Ballina Indoor Swim Team who make training as much fun as possible."

Right now Nathan's focus is the NSW State Championships which will be held at Cudgen Surf Club on Kingscliff Beach on the 18th, 19th and 20th of March. "I'm looking forward to competing against the best in the State at a beach that I've been competing at ever since I was a nipper. It will hopefully give me a bit of a home ground advantage"

Straight after the NSW Championships Nathan's attention will turn to the Australian Championships being held at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast commencing on the 5th of April. He will compete in the Board, Swim, Surf Ski and Ironman events as well backing up in many Team events. "It's been a long season, but I'm ready to step up and give it my best shot."

We wish Nathan the best of luck and every success competing for Lennox Head Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club at the upcoming NSW and Australian Championships.
